suffix of .ANI; this file is missing from the current directory.
You are still able to see the slideset but you should reinstate
the missing file from the distribution disk.

photographs or videos of microscopic subjects? Possibly, you

would like to hear from you with a view to using your material
in additional electronic slidesets for distribution in
Microscope for the PC.

distribution floppy disc. This feature runs an external program
which will allow you to add other slidesets to your collection.
Packs of slidesets are distributed on 1 or several floppy
discs. If you continue now, you will be expected to insert a
floppy disc into your PC's drive unit. Microscope will clear
from your screen when running the external program but will be
reactivated automatically after the external program ends.

slidesets installed on your hard disc. The program allows you
to delete slideset files from your hard disc or install
any existing ones into the control database so that Microscope
for the PC can make them available for use. If you are
attempting to install new slidesets from a floppy distribution

on instead and invoke the INSTALL FROM FLOPPY option.

Microscope is easy to use ONCE YOU KNOW A FEW BASICS about
loading slidesets. You may continue to access the TUTOR or
abort. If you continue, the screen will clear for a moment.
You will automatically return to Microscope after the Tutorial.

Registered packages are identified by the word 'REGISTERED'
appearing in Microscope's AUX window on start-up. Such versions
must NOT be used unless you are the Licensed user and have paid
the correct License fee! Versions identified as SHAREWARE in
the AUX window may be freely copied and distributed. Use of the
Shareware version is free for a period of 1 month from the time
it is installed on a PC. This is to enable users to decide if
they wish to purchase a LICENSED (REGISTERED) version. ONLY

the number of sets accessible from the control database. You may
only access the first 5 installed as listed in the LOAD window

the 'pick' window. UNINSTALL is done by clicking on the DBF
button. To stop this notice appearing - use only the minor arrow

HELP may be CONFIGURED with the CFG button to provide help
options depending on your expertise on using Microscope:-
        OFF: Auto-help not allowed. The help button will need
             to be pressed to receive help messages!
INTELLIGENT: Help messages auto-display on subsequent attempts
             to use an inappropriate control, if a different
             control is not operated between 1st & 2nd attempt.
       AUTO: Messages auto-display on inappropriate action.
     MANUAL: USER manually requests message on last action.

Use the mouse and left mouse button to click on one of the 4
buttons in the help bar above. Clicking on the FINI button will
clear this screen and return you to the main Microscope screen.
When using Microscope, HELP can be invoked automatically or
manually. If you set the HELP feature to AUTO by clicking on the
small button marked 'A' in the main help panel, then every time
you carry out an inappropriate action, this help screen will
appear. If you have also selected the 'FLASH QUICK HELP' auto
feature by clicking on the small button marked '!'   (more...)

then you will automatically receive a brief message when you
perform an inappropriate action. Once you get to know Microscope
and how to use it fully, these auto help features may begin to
annoy you. They may be switched off and on: CLICK ON 'A' for
AUTO HELP or 'M' to switch to MANUAL HELP. Toggle the '!' button
on or off to control auto flashes of brief help messages. These
3 buttons are located on the HELP panel on the Main screen. When
Auto-Help is off, you can invoke HELP by clicking on the HELP
button. You will normally get help on the last action performed!

Microscope is designed to be used without a manual and without
the need to search for a specific help topic. To learn how to
use Microscope, simply ensure the HELP feature is set to AUTO,

Another way of learning to use Microscope is to read through
this help file a section at a time; although this may be slower
than just having a go and learning by your mistakes. You can't
break anything by having a go, so why not just attempt to load
and use a slide set and see how you get on.
To use all features, you must have a slide (an image) loaded in
Microscope's viewer. This is the blank area in the centre of the
screen. Images are contained in data files termed slidesets.

BUTTON serves a similar purpose (EYES icon in the International
screen). STOP the video to use all of Microscope's features.

When an animated slideset is correctly loaded into the tray,
all the buttons in the Video Panel will become enabled.
Use buttons: JOG to loop several frames, STOP to halt action,
VIEW to start again, PAUSE to hold action, STEP to flick
through when PAUSED, PLAY to restart in FORWARD or REVERSE
when paused. STOP to use SAMPLING and EFFECTS. You must stop
the animation to use some of Microscope's other features!
A button is available to increase or decrease speed. When this
is set to maximum, the video sequence will run fastest.

Special Notes on using animated slidesets.

PERFORMANCE depends on disc-access speed, processor speed, size
of extended memory (if any is installed), caches, and memory-
managers. The higher performance your PC, the better animated
slidesets will run.

MOUSE CONTROL is less efficient when running animated slidesets.

a small period of time. This allows you to move the mouse and
click on another control. If you attempt to click on a control
when the pointer is flashing, responses will be more erratic.

POINTING TO IMAGE DETAIL can help one person teach another about
a certain feature of the slide displayed. Simply point at the
detail and hold down the left or right mouse button: animation
will pause until you release the button.

VIEWING TEXT FOR ANIMATED SLIDESETS is only possible when the
animated slideset is running. If you stop the animation (video)
then the text is removed from the screen. To view the text file
without distraction: start the video sequence running, PAUSE it
by clicking on the PAUSE button, and use the TEXT SCROLL buttons
in the bottom right hand corner to scroll through the text.
Don't forget to STOP the video by clicking on the STOP button if
you want to use many of the non-video buttons, for example to

INDICATORS do not exist for animated slidesets. Instead most
animated slidesets in a pack also include a STILL slideset
containing several key images from the animated set. This will
be accompanied by a text file with referenced indicators into
the still slideset images.

To use the VIEW button on either a STILL or ANIMATED slideset,
you must have a set loaded in the tray from the disc. On a STILL

(just below the VIEW control) to move the selector next to the
one you wish to see. Clicking on the VIEW button will then move
it into the viewer. Animated slidesets remove the selector mak-

If an animated slideset is already loaded and running, then
clicking on the VIEW button is considered an inappropriate
action. However, once the animated slideset has been halted in
response to clicking on the STOP button, the VIEW button may be
used to RE-Start the animation sequence. Note: animated slide-
sets may also be called Video Sequences within the help text.

Microscope uses electronic slidesets organised as a set of data
files. These must exist in the Microscope main directory and a
reference to them must exist in a special CONTROL database.
Installing new slidesets normally establishes this for you prior
to using the main program currently in use. Clicking on the LOAD
BUTTON opens the control database and displays a list of the
slidesets currently installed in a box at the base of this
screen. You can then use the large and small arrow buttons that
are presented to search for the next slideset you wish to ...

load into the slide tray. The large arrow buttons move you up
or down 5 entries at a time through the control database. The
small arrow buttons move you one entry at a time. Highlight the
slideset you wish to use and then click on the button with =OK
next to it to load the slideset. Clicking elsewhere in the
directory display box will abort the attempted load and leave
the currently loaded slideset in the tray. Once a slideset is
in the tray, use the VIEW button to put a still slide into the
viewer or to START an animated slideset running.

Special Notes regarding slideset loading problems:-

A still slideset or animated slideset is represented by four
files. For animated sets the filenames have file extensions of
.ANI, .QPL, .MIC, and .SET; STILL slidesets also have .QPL, .MIC
and .SET files but - instead of an .ANI file - have a .TUT file!
Should one of these files be accidentally deleted from the
directory then you will experience problems loading and running
slidesets. YOU must not delete files associated with slidesets!

If you wish to remove slidesets from your hard disc, use the
slideset management feature available from Microscope's main
menu system. The same feature can be used to install NEW
slidesets into the CONTROL database, although the appropriate
files must first be copied into the current directory from the
distribution discs.

[FOCUS, MAGNIFY, MOVE           :SECTION  5    - PAGE  1 OF  3]
Still slidesets consist of slides which may possess one of three
properties: focus, magnify, or move (the third may also be
referred to as STAGE type. These slide type are described below:

FOCUS   : The slide may have up to 4 different level of focus.
          Re-focusing is achieved by operating the FOCUS buttons
          to either focus more or less, or to reset to minimum.
          Focus slides may be REAL, that is - the original image
          was captured by a real Microscope at different levels
[FOCUS, MAGNIFY, MOVE           :SECTION  5    - PAGE  2 OF  3]
          of focusing; alternatively, the slide may have been
          digitally SHARPENED using software tools.


MAGNIFY : Like focus slides, a magnify type slide can be seen at
          up to 4 levels of magnification. The images may have
          been digitally magnified or captured via a real
          Microscope at different levels of magnification. The
          latter will provide increased resolution.
[FOCUS, MAGNIFY, MOVE           :SECTION  5    - PAGE  3 OF  3]
MOVE    : This type of slide can be repositioned to provide 4
          different views of the subject. Use the MOVE button to
          navigate the slide in the viewer to see 1 of the 4
          corners of the slide.

A small box beneath the slideset tray shows the number of levels
possible for whatever slide is in the viewer. The slide type can
be identified by seeing which slide-type control button is lit!
Any slide can only be a single type from one of these 3 types.
[LIGHT INTENSITY                :SECTION  6    - PAGE  1 OF  1]
Use the light control to increase or decrease the overall light
intensity. Slides will not be consistent in their levels of grey
scale, contrast, and brightness. You will need to adjust the
light each time you change an image to gain the optimum viewing
conditions. Using the light controls will reset any full colour
effect which may be active, such as the polariser. This will
cause the image to revert back to grey scale. The longest button
in the light control panel resets the light to default level!

[LIGHT FILTERS                  :SECTION  7    - PAGE  1 OF  1]
Four different colour filters can be selected: Halogen light -
(which is the default), daylight (most natural when used at
minimum intensity), Red, and Green. When using the Halogen
filter, intensity is increased or decreased by using the light
control only, but for all other filters you can adjust the
colour by using the filter intensity controls as well as using
the light control to vary overall brightness. The longest button
in the control panel will reset colour filter to default values
for filter type and filter intensity!
[OPTICAL TYPES                  :SECTION  8    - PAGE  1 OF  2]
Four optical types can be used to view any slide:-

Normal     : Image has balanced tones like a normal photo.
Contrast   : Image has higher contrast between shades.
Graphic    : Image simplified to 4 grey shades.
Negative   : Inverse normal shades. Use this type if you wish to
             view animation slidesets with shades inverted.
The longest bar in the control panel resets optical type to the
default type of normal. You should also note that changing the
[OPTICAL TYPES                  :SECTION  8    - PAGE  2 OF  2]
optical type will turn off the polariser, and return the image
to grey scale. The polariser may be turned back on again!

Use of the optical types along with the contour effect or
relief effect features will simulate real Microscope optical
arrangements: typically Nomarski and phase-contrast. Their use
along with the light and inverse effect controls will help you
see images in different perspectives; flat microscopic subjects
require visual-modelling from you to perceive their real form.
[EFFECTS                        :SECTION  7    - PAGE  1 OF  2]
Two effects are available. Also, two additional features have
been categorised as PSEUDO effects. The 2 real effects are:-
CONTOUR EFFECT : creates lines in the slide image along the
                 borders of some shaded areas. SPECIALLY USEFUL
                 WHEN POLARISER IS ON!!
RELIEF EFFECT  : This produces a 3D like effect as though the
                 subject had been in an embossing process - a
                 bit like looking at a footprint in the sand.
Use either the long button above the effects button to reset
[EFFECTS                        :SECTION  7    - PAGE  2 OF  2]
effects to normal or alternatively, use the effects buttons
themselves to toggle effects on or off. You can not use these
features on a animated slideset which is running: YOU MUST STOP
THE ANIMATION FIRST! Note: Contour and Relief Effects are Auto
Cancelled when accessing the directory or changing the image!!
The other 2 effects are NORMAL and INVERSE viewing. The default
is NORMAL viewing. These are set by you manually by pressing
either the normal or inverse viewing button. The inverse effect
is not appropriate on animations - see optical types for this!
[POLARISER & SELECT COLOUR      :SECTION  8    - PAGE  1 OF  3]
The Polariser button acts as a toggle to switch all grey shades
to colours, or reset all colours back to grey. It should be
noted that colours are not TRUE colours, since 16 possibilities
are insufficient to represent a colour image properly. The two
arrow buttons below the polariser control can be used to change
the colour range. The bottom most control on the polariser panel
allows a single colour to be changed; this control should be
used in conjunction with the three buttons to the right next to
the shade/colour selector display - a small box with 16 strips
[POLARISER & SELECT COLOUR      :SECTION  8    - PAGE  2 OF  3]
of grey (with polariser off). The three buttons enable you to
select a single grey for colour-switching. The two arrow buttons
move the grey/colour selector (a tiny white dot) up and down.
Operating the top button toggles the grey shade selected to
colour or back to grey. When any shade is being displayed as a
colour the bottom most button in the polariser panel is used to
select different colours for the one 'selected'. This set of
controls can help reveal image information in a more dramatic
way. The combination of controls is probably the most difficult
[POLARISER & SELECT COLOUR      :SECTION  8    - PAGE  3 OF  3]
to understand and may require a little practice to get used to
them. The Polariser and Single Colour Select are designed to be
transient options: use of other controls like the light, optic
type, or colour filter will reset all colours back to shades.

[SAMPLE OPTION                  :SECTION  9    - PAGE  1 OF  5]
A panel in the top right corner contains a group of controls
for taking samples from any slide on display. The most important
buttons are the two below the on/off light; this is a tiny black
window surrounded by 4 buttons with directional arrow icons
on them. If you are using the International screen, the ON
button is marked with a large tick and the OFF button with a
large cross. Turning the SAMPLE option on traps the Mouse cursor
inside the Sample panel until the OFF button is operated. It is
wise to switch off all indicators before turning the sample
[SAMPLE OPTION                  :SECTION  9    - PAGE  2 OF  5]
feature on. This will enable you to select and cut sections from
the slide without them containing indicator line elements.

When Sampling is turned on, a small box will appear in the slide
image. Use the four arrow buttons to position the box over the
part of the image you wish to cut. The degree of movement can be
selected by using the two buttons just to the right of the OFF &
ON buttons. When the desired position is achieved, cut the image
by using the 1x or 2x button. A section of the slide will be
[SAMPLE OPTION                  :SECTION  9    - PAGE  3 OF  5]
cut and placed in the sample tray. Up to three cuts can be
stored for the 1x option before you will need to use the TRASH
button to erase a previous sample and make room for a new one.
The left most image in the 1x sample tray is always trashed
when clearing out the 1x sample tray. A SHUFFLE button in the
top right of the sample panel may be used to shuffle around the
samples held in the 1x tray. This enables you to select which
image to trash and allows you the place any sample next to
another one for easy comparison of the image data.
[SAMPLE OPTION                  :SECTION  9    - PAGE  4 OF  5]
The 2x sample button will cut and double the size of the sample
taken. Only a single 2x sample may be held in the tray. You must
TRASH the 2x image before taking another 2x cut from the slide.
Although the 2x sample will magnify the image data, it does not
improve image resolution. The 2x sample may appear fairly
chunky. You can improve the smoothness of the 2x sample by
selecting the smooth option; two buttons to the right of the 2x
control allow you to select chunky or smooth cuts. The lower of
these should be operated prior to taking a sample if you prefer
[SAMPLE OPTION                  :SECTION  9    - PAGE  5 OF  5]
a smooth image. These buttons have no effect on 1x samples.
If you wish to take samples from a animated slideset then you
must STOP the animation sequence before attempting to turn the
sample feature on.
Sampling enables details from one slide to be compared with
those of another and enables additional magnification which may
be useful when studying very tiny detail in a slide.

[INDICATORS FEATURE             :SECTION 10    - PAGE  1 OF  3]
All STILL slidesets contain text to explain the subject matter
contained in the slide image. The text will have references
which appear as numbers within curly brackets against key words
or phrases. The number within any set of brackets will be from
0 to 9. To the left of the viewer on the main screen, a vertical
row of buttons can be seen with a number between 0 and 9 on the
face of each one. At the bottom of this row a further 5 buttons
exist to help control the Indicator feature. The LAST or BOTTOM
one of these buttons is the TOGGLE ON/OFF indicators feature.
[INDICATORS FEATURE             :SECTION 10    - PAGE  2 OF  3]
When Indicators are ON, each time a slide image from a STILL
slideset is changed, a set of lines will extend from the row of
indicator buttons into the image. These will correspond with the
number references from the text associated with the image on
view and will help you to find the correct element to study.
If INDICATORS are OFF, then only the tiny light for each active
indicator will be lit and no lines will be visible. If you click
on any indicator button which is active, the associated detail
in the slide image will be revealed; irrespective of whether
[INDICATORS FEATURE             :SECTION 10    - PAGE  3 OF  3]
the indicator lines are visible or not. The style of indicators
can be altered by using the 4 buttons between the ON/OFF toggle
and Indicator button 9. Note: Indicators are not available for
Animated slidesets.

[LOCK OR UNLOCK BLACK BACKGROUND:SECTION 11    - PAGE  1 OF  2]
Although images used in slidesets are designed to be viewed in
grey shades, several features allow the images to be seen in
colour: red, green, blue filters, or by using the Polariser.
The method used means that not only the slide images become
colour rendered - but everything else as well, including all
other elements on the screen. To prevent confusion, the back-
ground is configured to remain as black. You can use the button
which has a key icon on to allow the background to be released
from black. The background will then 'follow' colour ranges.
[LOCK OR UNLOCK BLACK BACKGROUND:SECTION 11    - PAGE  2 OF  2]
You should note that operating the lock/unlock background button
when the NEGATIVE microscope optics are in use will have no
effect. The background control is taken over by the program to
prevent errors in consistency of presentation whenever this
optical type is in use.

[AUXILIARY WINDOW FEATURE       :SECTION 12    - PAGE  1 OF  1]
The small window below the SAMPLE panel is normally closed. The
window may be opened manually by operating its button. The data
displayed when you do this provides data regarding Microscope's
version in use and the amount of spare memory available on your
PC. The window may also open under control of the software to
display additional information about a specific subject in a
slide or a slideset itself. In these circumstances, window
control is entirely depended on which slide is on view.

[FLASH SLIDE NAME ON SCREEN     :SECTION 13    - PAGE  1 OF  1]
Use the NAME button to see the title of the slide you are
currently viewing. The name will be flashed onto the screen and
remain until the time set under the CONFIGURE option elapses.
See the HELP regarding the CFG control to learn how to set the
FLASH NAME time period. If the last 3 characters of the
slide name contains numbers or graphic characters, they should
be ignored. These characters are used in slidesets to pass
control information to Microscope's main software.

Use the button marked FINI to end using Microscope and to return
to Microscope's internal Menu system. When you use the control
you are presented with a check before the program ends. If you

slidesets or display top/bottom five lines of text for still
slides. Still slides will have up to 10 lines of text for each
image of a set, while animated slidesets can have up to 36

Use the CFG button to reconfigure several key features to make
Microscope more suitable for your PC. When changing a setting,
the new one is saved automatically to a default file. This is
then used by Microscope to establish start-up parameters. If you
have a very fast or very slow PC, you will certainly need to
use configure to tailor microscope to your needs. Once you are
able to use Microscope well, you may also wish to permanently
turn off some of the auto-help features to prevent help text
from popping up on the screen when you hit a non-option.

Several external programs are called from Microscope by using
the larger buttons next to the AUX window. The screen will clear
but after the external program ends, you will be returned to
Microscope. Two of these external program options are used to

or re-install slidesets existing on your hard-disc. The second

The uninstall option will delete Microscope Slideset files from
the hard-disc. Where Microscope is used in an educational
environment, it may be undesirable for users to have open access
to the uninstall option. The set/reset facility enables password
protection so that files are not deleted unless authorised by
the password owner: for example - a class tutor. If password
protection is not required and you accidentally invoke the set /
reset option, you should press <ESCAPE> WHEN ASKED TO ENTER A
PASSWORD. Please refer to the Manual for full details.

All slidesets used by Microscope must be represented by having a
filename included in a special control database: MIC_CTRL.DTA.
This database and all slideset-associated files must exist in
the current directory on your hard-disc. To install or
re-install a slideset, ensure the following files have been
copied into the current directory from the distribution discs:-
       <slideset>.MIC   <slideset>.SET   <slideset>.QPL

Microscope performs only rudimentary error checks during
operation. This is to avoid slow animation and working. If
anything appears to be going wrong then DIAGNOSTICS will perform
several intelligent tests to try and indicate the problem. Some
of these tests include auto-correction solutions.  Problems most
likely will be caused by files being deleted by you outside of
Microscope's environment. Please remember to use the UN-INSTALL
option to get rid of unwanted slidesets. Don't just delete files
from your disc!

are a registered User - then you will get to know of significant
discoveries via a periodic newsletter. Comprehensive testing is
carried out on MICROSCOPE prior to launch, but as with any
highly complex program, bugs may appear. All feedback is welcome

A usable PASSWORD check file, MICPASS.CPT has not been found in

with or has become corrupt (or) the file has been deleted.
The file may have been deliberately erased to disable the
uninstall option (see Manual). If you wish to re-enable the
option to uninstall slidesets from your disc then you must
reinstate the missing file by copying it back into the current
directory from the original distribution discs.

Uninstall option is temporarily disabled!  This is only until
you have used the SET/RESET PASSWORD option at least once to
determine whether or not you wish to have PASSWORD PROTECTION
enabled. Uninstall is a powerful option. It can delete all
Microscope slideset files from your hard disc. You should use
the SET/RESET PASSWORD option from the menu to let the software
know if you will allow UNINSTALL to be used by anyone without
the need to input a password. Please refer to the Manual
regarding using Microscope in an educational or multi-user
environment.

The Uninstall option will delete slideset files from your hard
disc. You can establish PASSWORD CONTROL now to prevent users
from accessing Uninstall without first entering a correct pass-
word. This may be desirable in an educational environment.
Alternatively, you can disable the PASSWORD CONTROL option
permanently now and make the Uninstall option available to all.
If you wish to do this, the only way you can re-enable PASSWORD
CONTROL is by copying the file called MICPASS.CPT back into the
current directory from the distribution disc. Most single users
will not need PASSWORD CONTROL! See Manual for more details.

PASSWORD CONTROL of the UNINSTALL option has been set to be
permanently OFF. This means any user will be able to delete
slideset files from the hard disc. If you wish to re-establish
PASSWORD CONTROL of the UNINSTALL option, you must copy the
file called MICPASS.CPT back into the current directory from
the distribution disc. This will over-write the current file
by this name: this is the only way to re-enable PASSWORD
CONTROL!  Please refer to the Manual for more details.

Please enter PASSWORD. The word should be at least 4 characters
long. If changing a password or entering one for the first time
be sure to make a note of it. Should you forget the PASSWORD
and wish to UNINSTALL files, you will need to copy the file

now. This may take a while if you have processed a lot of discs.

Microscope uses electronic slidesets held as files on your disc!
To start, you must first load a slideset from the disc. This is
done by moving the mouse to point at the LOAD SLIDESET control
while clicking on the left mouse button.  The LOAD button you
must use is flashing now...

A window opens showing the slidesets currently installed and the
mouse cursor is trapped in the window. Normally, you use the
arrow buttons to highlight the set you want to use and click on
the 'OK' button to load it. For now, click on the flashing 'OK'
button to load the highlighted set! (Clicking elsewhere aborts.)

Well done! You can see a slideset has been loaded into the tray
on the left. The slideset may be of STILL images or a VIDEO
sequence. In both cases you must operate the VIEW SLIDE button
to transfer an image (slide) into the central viewing area.

You now know enough to get started. AUTO-HELP messages are used
when operating Microscope to guide you along a learning curve.
Also, remember that if you want to know what a control button
does, you only have to point at it AND HOLD THE RIGHT MOUSE
BUTTON pressed to find out. Try this on the flashing control.

Good! You are ready to go and start using Microscope. The last
thing you need to know is how to quit Microscope. Simply click
on the FINI button any time to quit. Try it now to leave the
TUTOR and return to Microscope. Remember to use the LEFT mouse
button to actually operate the control.

Try again! Don't forget: you must keep the right mouse button
held down. The button help-text disappears as soon as you let
